Summer fun and sun are unlikely to evoke thoughts of heater replacements. However, there are a few reasons why this time of year—with the birds singing and the air conditioner humming in the background—might be the best time to consider upgrading your heating system.
Is It Time to Make a Change?
The life expectancy of a furnace varies depending on how well the unit is maintained, as well as the local climate and average annual days of operation. In general, a gas-fired furnace, which is standard in most homes today, can be expected to last 15 to 20 years. As time passes, heating performance may deteriorate and furnace energy efficiency may no longer meet current standards, resulting in higher monthly bills. Increased wear and tear frequently forces decisions about whether to spend more money on costly repairs or upgrade now to a newer, more reliable and efficient unit.
Here are a few more reasons why this summer may be the best time to replace your heater:
- Off-season pricing and selection. As the weather begins to cool, furnace demand will increase, and prices will naturally rise. In the summer, however, demand is low, dealers offer more appealing prices to maintain volume, and a wider selection of units—including last year’s models at significant discounts—is available.
- You’re taking your time. Summer weather allows you to shop around and consider all of your options at your leisure. If, on the other hand, you put off replacing a heater until it unexpectedly fails during the coming winter, you’ll be under pressure to make a quick decision. That is never a good time to go shopping.
- Perhaps you’d prefer a package deal? A central air conditioner’s expected service life is typically shorter than that of a gas-fired furnace. If your A/C unit is also in need of replacement, replacing both the furnace and the air conditioner at the same time may be the most cost-effective option. When you replace the entire system, unit prices may be lower and installation costs may be lower.
